Some people also decide to change the hair dye brand after considering the ingredients involved in it. Ingredients like ammonia, pesticides, PPD p-Phenylene diamine, peroxide, and heavy metals are always added in any hair dye. Some of the ingredients can be harmful to the body. Hair dye made by the company is not allowed to go through safety testing. So nobody can be sure whether those ingredients can work best for your hair or are bad for your health.
Harmful Hair Dye Ingredients
Coal Tar
It is the mixture of chemicals which gives long lasting colors as compared to vegetable or natural dyes. However, with such ingredients, chances of cancer are high. Hence, if the hair dye product includes coal tae, a warning must be given stating the risk involved. It can be harmful for the people whose skin is sensitive. For safer side, it is advised to perform a skin test before use. Never apply such products on eyelashes or eyebrows as they can cause blindness.
Peroxide
This ingredient is used to break down the melanin in the shaft, so that hair color can be lightened. It releases oxygen that combines with molecules of dye, so that proper hair color can be established. It can result to some ever allergic recons or sometimes can cause skin irritation even though it is not toxic.
Para-Phenylenediamine (PPD)
It brings change in the color dramatically. No matter what type of color you have, it will surely give your hair a new look quickly. The Food and Drug Administration that regulates hair dyes have commented that this ingredient increases the chances of cancer. Hence, many doctors advise to use non-chemical-based or natural hair dye and minimize the use of permanent hair dye.
Ammonia
It is a key ingredient used for making the hair color last longer. However, if exposed to sun it can cause irritation to skin. Products like Garnier and L’oreal are ammonia free, but are more expensive as compared to other products.
The fact is if you use dye more than twice a month, it may increase the risk of cancer. The chances of developing bladder cancer are higher among the women who used permanent hair color over those who don’t. The risk can increase more if you’ve used permanent dye for more than 15 years. Hair dye has been used from a long time as people had the misconception that the product is harmless. The oldest product used as hair dye in olden days was Henna. However, some scientists also claim that such a natural component is highly toxic. Other than cancer, hair dye also increases the chances of rheumatoid arthritis.
Many women still try to solve the puzzle of, ‘are hair dyes safe’. The simple solution for this is to avoid using such product for long. The less you use this product, the more you save your life from getting in risk. It is not that all hair dyes can be dangerous. Temporary colors are comparatively less toxic. Compared to products that include chemical ingredients, the least toxic ingredients are the safest. Products like vegetable dyes, Hennas, and herbal dyes are effective and less harmful.
